Son de Madera performs son jarocho, a genre of music and dance typical of Veracruz, Mexico, with African, Spanish, and indigenous Mexican influences. One of the most renowned groups in the genre, they have been at the forefront of the revival and revitalization of son jarocho for over 25 years The music features the string instruments the requinto and jarana, as well as a rhythmic form of percussive stepping called zapateado. Today it is a living tradition that one can experience through the fandango, a type of son jarocho jam session, the spirit of which is well embodied in this band. Son de Madera’s core members are Ramón Gutiérrez Hernández, Tereso Vega, and Rubí Oseguera Rueda.
