San Francisco-born Laura Cortese started her professional musical life as a fiddler in her home state of California, eventually becoming a side-player with some of North America’s best known folk and roots performers, such a Pete Seeger, Band of Horses, Rose Cousins, and Uncle Earl. Coming up through the new acoustic scene surrounding the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Laura emerged as a stylish singer, fomenting her style of “post folk” music, a combination of pop with well rooted folk influences. I 2017, she and her Dance Cards (cellist Valerie Thompson, fiddler Jenna Moynihan, and bassist, Natalie Bohrn) broke new ground with a bold and elegant new album California Calling, based in the lyrical rituals of folk music, but exploring new territories of rhythm and sonics.
