The 40th anniversary year of the Harrison Festival also happens to be the 30th anniversary of Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys, one of the foremost touring acts in the history of Louisiana roots music. Led by accordion master Steve RIley, their stunningly clean and cohesive performances of Cajun French music from the backwaters of Southwest Louisiana have garnered them an international reputation. Their sets scan the range of moods in zydeco and cajun music: in one set the band will exalt in the revelry of a hot two-step, then turn on a dime and deliver an a cappella ballad, then play something that sounds like Howlin’ Wolf with a creole twist.
